How to Deal with a Case of the Blahs | Currently Well

Do you have a case of the ‘blahs’? The thing I’ve learned about negativity is that it can keep swirling in your head until eventually, it’s all that’s left. Don’t let stress consume you. While we can’t stop bad things from happening to us, we can change how we face them. And just maybe, make things a little better.

Here’s the plan:

Make yourself a warm drink.

For me, there’s nothing like a hot cup of green tea to steep my worries away.

Let it out.

Sometimes, we feel like climbing into our little dark holes and sitting their alone. It can feel more comforting to paint your life as perfect or give the impression that everything’s okay. Whether its a cry session over the phone or an hour-long rant, find a way to release the build-up of those unpleasant feelings by consoling with friends or family.

Prioritize self-care.

Don’t neglect your health (eat/sleep/exercise). On ‘bad days’, I have definitely found it much harder to take care of myself. It can be easy to feel unmotivated and feel like you don’t deserve it. Trust me, you do.

Dance it off.

Or shake it off may I add? A little ‘feel-good’ music + headphones into the mix and anything is possible. You’ll feel like you can take on the world!

Gratitude, always.

Write down a list of what you’re grateful for. While in the heat of the moment, it may be difficult to come up with things -try anyway. You’ll be surprised by what you can come up with it and how, really, life isn’t so bad after all.

Quotes, quotes & quotes!

Prepare a notebook or inspiration board filled with quotes to read when you’re having an off day.

Go for a walk.

Head outdoors, breathe in fresh air, and let your thoughts wander.

Laugh.

Settle in with a funny movie, look at pictures of happy things, and laugh for no apparent reason at all (did you know that the benefits of fake laughter for your body is the same as real laughter?!).

Feel those feelings.

Instead of trying to ignore how you feel, let them sink in. Recognize what you’re feeling and why. Every single day of your life won’t be the best. There are days in your life (and everyone else’s for that matter), that may not be as great as others, and that time maybe now but “this too shall pass.”

Remember, a new day awaits.

Treat each new day like a blank slate and start all over again.

I leave you with a quote that always makes me feel a little better:

    • Yes, its one of my favourite quotes! And I learned about the fake laugh fact in laughter yoga (yes, there is such a thing!). 🙂
